CBN's New BVN Directives: What MoniePlanners Need to Know

|2 min read

Hey MoniePlanners! The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has rolled out new directives around your Bank Verification Number (BVN), and they take effect today, 1st May 2026. Don't worry, none of this is scary, but there are a few things worth knowing so you don't get caught off guard. Let's break it down.

1. Your BVN can be temporarily watchlisted (but only for 24 hours)

If your bank suspects a transaction on your account is fraudulent, they can place your BVN on a temporary watchlist while they investigate. The good news? It's capped at 24 hours, and within that window, your bank is required to reach out to you to clarify the flagged transaction.

What this means for you: If your bank calls or messages you about a suspicious transaction, respond as soon as possible. The faster you clear things up, the faster you're back to normal.

2. You must be 18 or older to enrol for a BVN

BVN enrolment is now strictly for people aged 18 and above.

What this means for you: If you have kids and want to start building their financial habits early, look into children's or teen savings accounts that don't require a BVN. Once they hit 18, they can enrol and graduate to full banking services.

3. You can only change your BVN-linked phone number once

That's it. One change. Forever.

What this means for you: Choose wisely. Link your BVN to a phone number you actually plan to keep long-term, not the SIM you're about to abandon. This number is how you'll get banking alerts and verification codes, so make it count.

4. Only licensed banks can access BVN data

Access to the BVN database is restricted to CBN-licensed financial institutions. The CBN can grant access in special circumstances, but only as permitted by law.

What this means for you: Your BVN data isn't floating around for just anyone to access. It's locked down to regulated institutions, which is a win for your privacy and security.
